National Merit Scholar

Random Lake, WI — The School District of Random Lake proudly announces that Sutton Wilterdink, son of Randy and Melissa Wilterdink, has been named a National Merit Scholar semifinalist. This prestigious recognition places Sutton among the top academic achievers in the nation. He is the second student from Random Lake to earn this distinction in the past three years.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is a highly competitive academic recognition that honors students who demonstrate exceptional academic ability and represents students scoring in the top 1% of the nation. Sutton's achievement reflects both his hard work and the support provided by Random Lake's Gifted and Talented program.

Sutton’s father, Randy Wilterdink, shared his thoughts on his son’s journey: “It was important to me that my sons were academically challenged, which is why we made the decision to school choice them into Random Lake. The opportunities here have helped them thrive.”

“Our Gifted and Talented program is designed by utilizing our small district advantage that challenges our brightest students with higher rigor curriculum in their gifted areas while still remaining with their age appropriate peers,” said Michael Trimberger, District Administrator of the Random Lake School District. “Sutton’s achievement highlights the program’s success in nurturing advanced learners and ensuring they are equipped with the resources and opportunities to thrive.”

Sutton has expressed interest in studying computer science at the University of Utah, and he believes that this award will help him in his journey toward higher education.

The district’s Gifted and Talented program focuses on differentiated instruction, subject acceleration, and individualized educational plans tailored to meet the needs of high-achieving students. Over the years, this approach has contributed to higher academic outcomes and increased opportunities for students like Sutton.

Sutton now moves on to compete for the finalist designation, a process that will continue into 2025. The School District of Random Lake is confident that his success will inspire other students to strive for excellence in academics.
